What is Person Centered?

The Person Centered approach was developed by Carl Rogers in the fifties. The idea is that the client is ultimately the best authority on themselves and can be facilitated towards healing by retaining utmost control in the session. For example; the client moves at their own pace and is not made to feel anything other than equal to the therapist. Obviously the therapist will be using his skills to guide the client towards the sense of safety that allows deeper exploration and insight to occur. `Empathic reflection` is used to secure release of any repressed thoughts/feelings.
What is Humanistic?

The Humanistic approach is based on the ideas of Abraham Maslow: who proposed that Self-Actualisation is the need to realize one`s latent potential, understand oneself and establish oneself as a whole person. This is similar to Carl Jung`s idea of `individuation` and could be said to indicate a hidden dimension to life and the development of the `self`.
What is the Existential approach ?

Existential ideas come from the philosopher Kierkegaard and are based on the enquiry into the nature of the mind and experience, particularlyas it is in the present moment.
